He Taonga Term 1-2 2013
As a class the children will be able:
To develop an appreciation and understanding of what makes our school iconic in relation to the people, places and cultures around us. Discover, inspire and create a masterpiece based around our community, school values and Maori culture.
We want the children to:
- Promote the creativity - plan, design and collaborate as a team to create a “design" (ended up being a mosaic).
- Develop the mindset of pushing the boundaries/trying something new.
- Learn about the Maori visual arts, symbols and meanings used in Maori art works.
- Record and share their learning journey either through a journal, digital journal or blog (Weebly).
- Develop a basic understanding of our school icon throughout the values to incorporate our school values and culture into the art piece.
Our School Values:
WHY???
Why (Age) – To gain an understanding of the visual arts that are part of our New Zealand culture. To gain a deeper understanding of visual Maori symbols and patterns. To look at ways of going through a process to come up with a piece of art. People’s journeys are different and the process may be slightly different, (research Maori designs to gain an understanding of their meaning then using those ideas, create your design and art piece that displays our place in our community)
Why (Time) – Children can share ideas and work together independently on their own learning with guidance. Able to take and receive feedback, think critically about their design and the use of this and how it has incorporated aspects of the brief design. To develop a sense of empathy towards others and need to form more of an identity for themselves.
Why (Developmental level) `To explore art making conventions taking into account previous learning on elements and the use of materials. To begin planning out a project in sequence before they begin the challenge. To explore and gain an understanding of the elements, patterns and symbols with Maori Visual arts. The children are ready to investigate objects from our past to gain a better understanding of our community and place in the world.
Why (Community) – We have many examples of Maori Visual arts around us in our daily lives. We will have a better understanding of what the designs mean as it is a part of our New Zealand culture and unique to us as New Zealanders. Also have many Maori visual artists who are passionate about sharing our culture through their art. To engage in community involvement with emphasis on the Maori and for us to build and identify our place within the community.
Why (Culture) – Importance about identity and being proud of where you live. To develop empathy and understanding of Maori artworks and the significance of it’s meaning. The children will be able to identify the symbols within our community and beyond the harbour
